Present-day Slovenia was formerly one of the six constituent republics of Yugoslavia and became independent in 1991 when Yugoslavia fell apart. It borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.
Four major geographical regions of Europe meet in Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinaric region, the Pannonian plain and the Mediterranean. The country is mountainous and Slovenians are avid skiers and hikers. The national flag shows the three-pointed Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain at 2,864 meters.
The country was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The capital Ljubljana was founded in Roman times. The university with more than 50,000 students contributes to the lively cultural life of the city. The main industries are auto parts, chemicals, electronics, electrical appliances, metal goods, textiles and furniture. Tourist attractions include the famous Postojna Cave, decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. Graffiti in the caves show that the first tourists came here in 1213.
Slovenian cuisine is heavily influenced by that of its neighbors. Strudel and Wiener Schnitzel come from Austria. Italy has contributed risotto and ravioli and Hungarian goulash. Potica is a traditional Slovenian cake made by rolling up a layer of dough covered with walnuts.
The best-known Slovenes include the physicist Jožef Stefan, the linguist Franc Miklošič and the architect Jože Plečnik.
Health & Wellbeing Comprehensive health and social benefits, including pension, disability and choice of public or private healthcare provider.
Economy & Jobs Agriculture, tourism and electrical machinery.
Main attraction Ljubljana, beach towns on the Adriatic coast, the Julian Alps and the Škocjan Caves
Business Slovenia is now a developed country enjoying prosperity and stability, with a GDP per capita of 88% of the EU27 average. It was the first new member of the European Union to introduce the euro as its currency in January 2007 and has been a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development since 2010.
Slovenia has a highly qualified workforce, well-developed infrastructure and is located at a major traffic junction. On the other hand, the level of foreign direct investment is one of the lowest, and the Slovenian economy was hit hard by the European economic crisis that started in the late 2000s. Almost two thirds of the people are employed in the service sector.
